TROUBLES IN DREAMS
TROUBLES IN DREAMS by Marco Rigamonti
For about ten years I printed my images at the same lab in Milan.
Mario would run a series of color tests before giving the final approval for printing. A portion of the negatives—the most significant ones—was printed in random sequence and used as a general reference to understand whether the color tone of each individual photograph was the desired one.
Mario would then tear up the series of test prints and throw them in the trash. He did this with all his clients, but not with me.
For ten years, I kept the color tests to myself, with the idea that over time they might become an autonomous body of work.
Error, rejection, what is destined to be thrown away, generates a new and vital meaning.
Depression is a mood disorder characterized by symptoms such as profound sadness, reduced vitality, loss of interest in usual activities, negative and pessimistic thoughts, alterations of cognitive functions, and disturbances of sleep and appetite.
When my wife Cristina fell into depression, I realized that the illness does not affect only the patient but also those close to them, first and foremost their family. Through photography, I tried to imagine the dark and confused thoughts that swam like fish in my wife’s head—thoughts she is now, after much suffering, emerging from as she comes out of the tunnel.
